The topography of 3D areal measurements is becoming more important in the quality assessment of surfaces, especially during the coating process. This regards the characterization of functional surfaces and structures, e.g., form, texture and wear, all need to be evaluated. Just 2D line profiles are not sufficient and 3D areal measurements by line profilers are very time consuming. Quality assurance in surface processing is often time sensitive, especially, when larger surface areas need to be evaluated. So optical methods can overcome these disadvantages. In the following we investigated the use of coherent scanning interferometers in real world and manufacturing environments. Here the measurement technology and coating applications are discussed.
